FIMER launches PVS990-2000 central inverter for utility-scale solar

FIMER has launched the PVS990-2000, a 2 MW central inverter platform for utility-scale solar with ratings from 2,000 kVA to 8,000 kVA, 1,500 V DC input and a maximum efficiency of 99% or higher. FIMER has not given a price or availability date.

FIMER has introduced the PVS990-2000, a 2 MW central inverter for utility-scale solar plants, pv magazine India reports. The platform covers power ratings from 2,000 kVA to 8,000 kVA and uses a scalable architecture that FIMER says is meant to support multi-megawatt plants while optimising system efficiency and cutting installation time. FIMER has not given a price or an availability date.

“The PVS990 is the result of FIMER’s continued investment in R&D, shaped by the evolving needs and feedback of our customers across the global utility-scale market,” said KN Sreevatsa, Group Co-CEO of FIMER. He added that the company had brought together decades of power-electronics expertise, advanced engineering and real-world project insights to build a platform that is “distinctive in its scalability, performance and grid-support capabilities”.

Technical Specifications

The PVS990-2000 central inverter covers a power rating range from 2,000 kVA to 8,000 kVA, allowing it to serve various sizes of utility-scale installations. On the DC side, the unit accepts an input voltage of up to 1,500 V, with a specific operating voltage range defined between 935 V and 1,350 V. The inverter is designed to handle a maximum DC current of 2,300 A, supporting up to seven distinct DC inputs.

FIMER specifies a maximum efficiency of 99% or higher for the PVS990-2000. The company reports a European efficiency of 98.8% or higher. European efficiency is a weighted average that accounts for partial load conditions, which are common during sunrise, sunset, and cloudy periods, offering a more realistic indicator of daily energy yield than peak efficiency alone. The table below summarizes the key electrical specifications provided for this model.

Parameter Value
Power rating 2,000 kVA to 8,000 kVA
DC input voltage Up to 1,500 V
DC operating voltage range 935 V to 1,350 V
Maximum DC current 2,300 A
DC inputs Up to seven
Maximum efficiency 99% or higher
European efficiency 98.8% or higher

Other listed features include global grid compliance, comprehensive AC- and DC-side protection, and simplified commissioning that does not need a separate chiller installation. FIMER also offers lifecycle services through its global service network.

Physical Design and Environmental Rating

The PVS990-2000 sits in an IP65-rated outdoor enclosure measuring 956 mm × 2,300 mm × 2,000 mm. IP65 is the rating for enclosures that are dust-tight and protected against water jets.

The unit weighs approximately 1,500 kg, so it is a crane-and-foundation item rather than a wall-mounted string inverter. It is rated to operate in ambient temperatures ranging from -20 degrees C to +60 degrees C, and begins to derate its power output when the ambient temperature reaches 52 degrees C. Derating means the inverter cuts its output to protect its components, so in desert sites where afternoon temperatures pass 52 degrees C, its full rating will not be available at those hours.

Grid Integration and Communication

  • Grid-support functionality
  • Power quality management
  • Fault ride-through capability
  • Parallel operation support
  • Night-time reactive power compensation
  • Communication with SCADA systems
  • Support for up to five master units

FIMER lists grid-support functions including power quality management, fault ride-through, which allows the inverter to remain connected to the grid during transient disturbances rather than tripping offline, and night-time reactive power compensation. Night-time reactive power compensation means the inverter can supply reactive power to help hold grid voltage when the array is producing nothing. It also supports parallel operation.

For plant control, the inverter supports industrial data communication through supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems, and communication with up to five master units.

The Indian market for central inverters

The launch was reported by pv magazine India, and India is a market where central inverters still lead. India installed nearly 50 GW of solar in 2025, and Harshul Kanwar estimated that year's inverter demand at roughly 60% central and 40% string, as Luminity reported on 20 October. The direction of travel is towards string inverters, because central units are harder to maintain, risk long downtime and face a shortage of skilled technicians, though Kanwar expected the shift to be gradual and large-scale demand to stay substantial. Most inverters sold in India are still imported; Waaree Energies recently opened a 3.05 GW inverter factory in Gujarat.

An expected move from today's 1,500 V DC standard to 2,000 V may again favour central inverters, Kanwar said, though the higher voltage still has to be proven safe and reliable at scale. The PVS990-2000 is specified at up to 1,500 V, and FIMER has not said whether a 2,000 V version is planned.

What to watch

FIMER has not said when the PVS990-2000 will ship, which markets get it first, or whether it has customer orders. Those details, and the first projects that name it, will show how far the 8,000 kVA top of the range is actually used.
