Suzuki Leads Japan-India Lithium Battery Venture in Gujarat

Suzuki Heads India’s Lithium-Ion Battery Market with Gujarat Venture

While Tesla’s gigafactories are well-known, a similar development is unfolding in Gujarat. Suzuki, Toshiba, and Denso have launched India’s first locally-made lithium battery electrodes through their TDSG joint venture.

Breaking Ground in Gujarat’s Lithium-Ion Battery Industry

Until now, most Indian EV batteries were imported as knock-down kits and assembled locally. The TDSG facility in Gujarat changes this by producing electrodes on-site, allowing for over 80% local sourcing of battery value. This move significantly impacts Maruti Suzuki hybrids rolling out next year.

From Gujarat to Global Markets

Apart from batteries, Suzuki also unveiled the e-Vitara, their first global electric SUV. What’s more, these India-made EVs will supply 100+ countries, including Europe and Japan. This strategic move positions India as an EV export hub.

The Solar Angle You Might’ve Missed

This development isn’t just about the auto industry. Once paired with India’s solar farms, these batteries can help solve the duck curve problem – when solar generation peaks at noon, but demand surges at night. Imagine Maruti’s batteries doing double duty as grid stabilizers.

Regional Manufacturing

With FAME II subsidies driving local procurement, TDSG’s timing is perfect. Their Gujarat plant utilizes Toshiba’s SCiB tech – the same technology powering bullet trains. This means fast charging, long lifespan, and enhanced safety for lithium-ion batteries.

This groundbreaking development reshapes India’s renewable ecosystem – one battery at a time. As the country strides towards a cleaner, more sustainable future, Suzuki’s Gujarat venture marks a significant milestone in the solar revolution. With innovative solutions and collaborations, India is poised to become a leader in the global lithium-ion battery market.
