SECI Hits Record Low with $0.59/kg Green Ammonia Auction

The Solar Energy Corp of India (SECI) just set a new benchmark in the green energy sector. Their latest auction revealed a record-low green ammonia price of INR 51.8 per kg, roughly $0.59/kg or $591.25 per metric ton. NTPC Renewable Energy Ltd won the bid, promising to supply 70,000 metric tons annually to Krishana Phoschem’s facility in Madhya Pradesh.

Why This Matters for the Solar Industry

Green ammonia is gaining traction as a clean alternative to fossil fuels, especially in heavy industries. This price drop narrows the gap with gray ammonia, which hovered around $515 per ton in March 2025. For solar professionals, this signals a shift—renewables aren’t just for electricity anymore.

The SIGHT Scheme’s Role

This auction is part of India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission, specifically the SIGHT Mode-2A scheme. The goal? Procure 724,000 metric tons of green ammonia annually through 13 auctions. It’s a bold move to create long-term demand and stabilize prices for producers.

Comparing the Numbers

Just a month earlier, ACME Cleantech Solutions secured a deal at INR 55.75/kg ($641/ton) for supplying Paradeep Phosphates in Odisha. The new price undercuts that by nearly 7%. While skeptics might say green ammonia is still pricier than gray, the gap is shrinking faster than expected.

What’s Next for Green Ammonia?

With projects like these, India’s positioning itself as a leader in green hydrogen derivatives. The question isn’t whether green ammonia will compete with fossil-based options—it’s when. For solar developers, this opens doors beyond traditional PV projects. Think hybrid setups: solar panels powering electrolyzers to produce ammonia.

This reminds me of California’s 2020 rollout of renewable hydrogen hubs. Back then, costs seemed prohibitive. Now, with SECI’s auction, the economics are starting to make sense. Reliability isn’t a luxury—it’s non-negotiable, and green ammonia could be the missing link for 24/7 clean energy.
