Prime Minister Unveils NTPC’s 2,400 MW Nabinagar Power Project
India’s clean energy transition reached a significant milestone as the Prime Minister laid the foundation stone for NTPC’s Nabinagar Super Thermal Power Project Stage II. This 3×800 MW coal-fired plant in Bihar represents a strategic balance in India’s power generation mix during the renewable energy shift.
Project Overview and Economic Impact
The joint venture between NTPC Limited and Bihar State Power Holding features ₹14,000 crore investment and will generate 15,840 million units annually – equivalent to 1.5% of national capacity. The project aligns with NTPC’s renewable expansion while addressing immediate power needs.
- Location: Aurangabad district, Bihar
- Technology: Supercritical (higher efficiency)
- Employment: 5,000+ jobs during construction
Energy Security and Technological Advancements
Using supercritical technology, the plant achieves 42% efficiency versus 35% for subcritical units, reducing coal consumption and emissions. This complements India’s solar manufacturing growth in meeting rising demand.
Key Benefits:
- Enhanced grid reliability for industrial growth
- Reduced dependence on power imports
- Lower carbon intensity than older coal plants
Regional Development and Future Outlook
The project will stimulate Bihar’s economy through direct employment and secondary sector growth. NTPC plans to commission units progressively through 2027, maintaining momentum in India’s renewable energy surge while ensuring baseload power stability.
