Native-Led Solar Project Powers Montana Buffalo Site Off-Grid
Indigenized Energy, a Native-led nonprofit pushing for tribal energy independence, has just completed its third solar collaboration with Freedom Forever. This latest project features a rugged off-grid system keeping the lights on at a remote buffalo caretaker spot on the Northern Cheyenne Reservation, thanks to solar power and advanced home batteries.
Why This Partnership Hits Different
Most solar deals focus on profit margins. Not this one. Freedom Forever brought the technical know-how, while Indigenized Energy ensured cultural alignment and sustainable manufacturing. The result? A system that respects traditions while cutting carbon.
Key Tech Components
500W bifacial solar panels catch rays from both sides, paired with lithium-ion batteries that can withstand harsh Montana winters. The microgrid runs on Fronius inverters—no grid-tie needed. This technology helps ensure a stable power supply and shows the potential for sustainable rooftop solar in various applications.
Bigger Than Just One Installation
This isn’t charity—it’s a blueprint. The Northern Cheyenne now have a local crew trained in O&M, and the tribal council is drafting policy changes to fast-track more projects. Meanwhile, Freedom Forever is tweaking their commercial models for other reservations, contributing to the expansion of renewable projects in different regions.
What’s Next for Tribal Solar?
With $7M in federal grants now accessible for tribal energy projects, the dominoes are falling. Next up: a 5MW community solar farm that’ll slash energy costs by 60% for 300 homes, further demonstrating the power of industrial rooftop solar for sustainability.
