Microsoft’s 408 MW Ash Creek Solar Project Powers Texas Grid

Primergy Solar has officially flipped the switch on the 408 MWac Ash Creek solar facility in Hill County, Texas. The project, now fully operational, feeds clean energy into the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) grid—adding reliable capacity to one of America’s fastest-growing solar markets. But here’s the kicker: Microsoft is the anchor tenant through a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA), showcasing how corporate buyers are reshaping the energy landscape.

Big Dollars, Bigger Impact

With $588 million in project financing and $350 million in tax equity, Ash Creek represents nearly $1 billion in clean energy investment. MUFG Bank and SMBC led the charge as structuring arrangers, proving that institutional lenders are all-in on solar. But what does this mean for Hill County? Try $100 million in projected tax revenue over the plant’s lifespan—money that’ll directly fund schools and infrastructure.

From Blueprint to Megawatts

Originally developed by Orion Power Generation (a JV between Orion Renewable Energy Group and Eolian), Primergy acquired Ash Creek in 2021. Solv Energy handled the engineering and construction, creating 350 temporary jobs during build-out. Now, six full-time staff maintain the facility—a small team for such a massive output. Fun fact: This isn’t Primergy’s first rodeo. They’re also behind Nevada’s 690 MW Gemini solar-plus-storage project, which went live just last month.

Why ERCOT Needs More Solar

Texas leads the U.S. with 43.5 GW of installed solar capacity—enough to power 5 million homes. Yet during last summer’s heatwaves, ERCOT still faced strain. Projects like Ash Creek provide dispatchable capacity without the emissions of peaker plants. “It’s about marrying reliability with sustainability,” says Primergy CEO Ty Daul. With solar now supplying 8% of Texas’ electricity, the state proves renewables aren’t just supplemental—they’re foundational.

The Corporate PPA Playbook

Microsoft’s involvement follows a trend: Tech giants locking in fixed energy rates while hitting ESG goals. For developers, these agreements derisk projects, making financing easier. Skeptics ask if corporations are just greenwashing, but the numbers don’t lie. Ash Creek will offset nearly 600,000 metric tons of CO2 annually—equivalent to taking 130,000 cars off the road.

What’s Next for Texas Solar?

With SEIA reporting 12,000+ solar jobs in Texas, the industry’s growth seems unstoppable. But challenges remain: interconnection queues, transformer shortages, and occasional political pushback. Still, when a project like Ash Creek delivers both megawatts and community benefits, it’s hard to argue against the momentum. Want proof? Just watch how quickly the next billion-dollar solar deal gets announced.
