India Solar Capacity Hits 29.5 GW Record in 2025 First 9 Months

India’s Solar Capacity Reaches 29.5 GW Record in 2025 First 9 Months

India’s solar sector has witnessed a remarkable growth, with a 70% year-on-year surge, adding 29.5 GW of solar capacity between January and September 2025. This growth is equivalent to powering roughly 5.9 million Indian homes annually.

Utility-Scale Dominates, But Rooftop Isn’t Playing Catch-Up

Utility projects have taken the lead, accounting for 22.5 GW of the total capacity, while rooftop solar has grown by 81.6% to reach 5.8 GW. Interestingly, nearly half of these rooftop systems were installed during the monsoon months, indicating that rain doesn’t deter Indian solar ambitions. Tata Power and Amplus Solar have reportedly led the residential charge, while Adani Green has bagged mega-project wins.

Wind and Off-Grid Join the Party

Wind energy has contributed a respectable 4.96 GW to the mix, but solar’s 52% share of India’s 247.3 GW renewable portfolio tells the real story. Even off-grid solar has seen action, with 1.17 GW of capacity added, proving that decentralized solutions are gaining traction.

The Battery Elephant in the Room

As solar growth continues to soar, grid stability becomes increasingly critical. States like Karnataka are already testing Tesla Megapacks alongside domestic players like Loom Solar. The question remains: will 500 GW by 2030 actually happen? The numbers suggest yes — unless land acquisition drama stalls the party.

What’s Fueling This Boom?

Three key factors have driven this growth: ALMM list relaxation, rising module surpluses, and those sweet, sweet net metering policies. Solar now costs ₹2.53/kWh — cheaper than coal in 7 states. This has led to even steel plants going solar-first.

The Road Ahead: Bumps or Highways?

Transmission infrastructure needs $12 billion upgrades, according to CEA estimates, and module recycling remains unregulated. Yet, with IS
