Geronimo Begins 125-MW Solar Farm in Jackson County Michigan
Geronimo Power has broken ground on its 125-MW solar project in Jackson County, Michigan, with operations expected to start early next year. The project marks another step in the company’s expansion across the Midwest—a region that’s quickly becoming a hotspot for renewable energy. Joe Ibrahim, VP of construction at Geronimo, shared his enthusiasm: “As a company founded on a farm in the rural Midwest, I’m thrilled to see our MISO footprint grow.”
Why Jackson County?
Michigan might not be the first place that comes to mind for solar power, but the state’s renewable portfolio standards (RPS) and available land make it a smart pick. Jackson County offers ample acreage and strong community support, key for large-scale solar farms. And with MISO’s grid infrastructure already in place, interconnection headaches are minimized—something any developer will appreciate.
The Tech Behind the Project
While Geronimo hasn’t disclosed the exact solar panels or inverters, projects this size typically use monocrystalline panels paired with string inverters from brands like Fronius or SMA. Battery storage isn’t part of this phase, but don’t be surprised if it’s added later. After all, pairing solar with Tesla Powerwalls or similar systems is becoming the norm.
But What About Winter?
Great question. Solar in Michigan? Really? While snowfall can temporarily reduce output, modern panels are designed to shed snow quickly. Plus, cold temperatures actually improve panel efficiency—something counterintuitive but true. And with net metering policies in place, excess summer generation can offset winter dips.
The Bigger Picture
This project is part of a broader Midwest solar boom. States like Illinois and Ohio are also seeing massive solar farms pop up, thanks to falling costs and rising demand for clean energy. It’s not just about being green—it’s about economics. Solar is now cheaper than coal in many markets, and that’s a game-changer.
What’s Next for Geronimo?
With this Michigan project underway, Geronimo’s Midwest expansion seems unstoppable. Could Indiana or Wisconsin be next? Only time will tell, but one thing’s clear: rural America is becoming solar country, and companies like Geronimo are leading the charge.
