Zambia’s $300 Million Solar Push to Electrify Lobito Corridor

Zambia is making a bold move towards universal electricity access—and solar energy is at the heart of it. ZESCO, the country’s national utility, has teamed up with Anzana Electric Group in a $300 million joint venture. Their goal? To connect 2 million people along the Lobito Corridor by 2030.

The Lobito Corridor is a vital trade route stretching across southern Africa, but many communities along it still lack reliable power. Zambia’s rural electrification rate sits at just 14%, making this project critical for economic growth and development. Solar power has the potential to bridge this gap, offering a sustainable and efficient solution.

While the joint venture hasn’t specified the energy mix, insiders expect photovoltaic (PV) systems to dominate. Zambia gets over 3,000 hours of sunlight annually, making it an ideal location for solar energy generation. Projects might combine ground-mounted arrays with battery storage to ensure a 24/7 supply of electricity.

The $300 million price tag may seem steep, but spread over seven years and two million beneficiaries, it works out to just $150 per connection—far cheaper than extending traditional power lines through rough terrain. Private-sector involvement through Anzana also suggests innovative financing models are at play.

Maintenance technicians aren’t exactly plentiful in rural Zambia. The partners will need to train locals, creating jobs while ensuring long-term sustainability. Corruption perceptions and currency instability could spook investors, but the African Development Bank’s recent $5 billion energy pledge shows confidence in such projects.

For manufacturers like JinkoSolar or Longi, this represents a massive market opener. Zambia’s solar imports already grew 17% last year. The project could drive demand for off-grid solar home systems and hybrid mini-grids, powering a cleaner, more sustainable future for the Lobito Corridor.
